2012 Highlights

2012 has been an exciting year for Don Bosco in Samoa. The highlights are numerous and a selection of them is highlighted. Further articles can be found in the Our Work section of the Don Bosco Samoa website.

Salesian Religious Communities

The Feast of St John Bosco (31 January) marked the renewal of Salesian Profession for five of the brothers on the early stages of their lives as Salesians. Fr Filipo Kapeli, who has previously worked at Sunbury and Ferntree Gully in Australia, was ordained a priest on 29 May.

2012 Fautasi Champions

The boys of Don Bosco Alafua were the 2012 National Fautasi Champions. The victory was all the sweeter because the race was conducted as part of Samoa’s celebrations of 50 years of Independence.

We’ve also had a number of visiting groups including the Principals of Salesian Schools in Australia, a group from the Cagliero Youth Missionary Project, and students from Salesian College, Sunbury. Fr Chambers, the Salesian Provincial, blessed the community Chapel at the Salesian Residence at St Michael’s Parish Leauva’a.

Youth Activities

Youth in the three Salesian Parishes are very active in a range of sporting, religious and cultural activities. Some of the highlights included a formation day for youth in St Michael's Parish, Leauva'a; SamBosco, a weekend at Salelologa for Don Bosco Youth Samoa (youth from our two schools and three parishes), and the Youth of the Sinamoga-Moamoa parish recording a CD.

Elissa Galante has written a wonderful reflection on her six months as a Cagliero Youth Missionary at Don Bosco High School and Vocational Centre in Salelologa.

There is also a moving description of life in a poor family by a very happy young Samoan girl.
