It was the first time in many years that the staff and students at Don Bosco Technical Centre, Alafua, had the opportunity to celebrate the feast on the actual day. 24 May used to occur during the school holidays. However, a change to a four term year this year has meant that the feastday now falls in school time, an opportunity to celebrate in truly Salesian style that nobody wanted to miss.

The day began with Mass celebrated by the Archbishop, who was visiting Don Bosco for the first time since his appointment as Archbishop in 2002. The Mass was characterised by the superb singing of the boys, the Archbishop’s thoughtful homily and an atmosphere of joyful prayer. After the Mass Archbishop Alapati had morning tea with the staff before having photographs with the staff and Year 4 students. As he was leaving the Archbishop expressed his delight at the Mass, the boys’ attentive joyfulness and the quality of their singing.

All classes were cancelled for the feast and replaced by a concert prepared by students. Each class presented ten minutes of entertainment for the whole school. The event was eagerly anticipated by the students, who thoroughly enjoyed the entertaining antics, well-choreographed dancing, and inspiring singing of their companions. The entertainment was a joyful mix of the comic and the serious, with classes seeking to amuse, enthral and teach as they entertained each other.

The day concluded with the students’ favourite treat: “chilly choc” ice creams.
