Why Support Us?

To make a difference

Your support for Don Bosco Samoa makes a difference to the lives of young people who experience disadvantage on a daily basis. Your support will assist to provide them with education, trades training, sporting and recreational activities and cultural opportunities. This enables them to find hope, develop with dignity, find employment and support their families.

Samoa is often neglected, forgotten or overlooked

Most people know only the Samoa of tourist brochures highlighting the tropical climate, relaxed lifestyle, beautiful beaches and friendly locals.  Few truly know the full story of this nation and its beautiful people.  Samoa is certainly not perceived of as a major priority when it comes to international aid and development.  In the public imagination there are lots of poorer countries in more urgent need of support.  This also means that Samoa is often forgotten, overlooked and neglected.  Yet young people in Samoa experience disadvantage on a daily basis.

Young people in Samoa experience disadvantage

There are lots of young people in Samoa.  Approximately 36% of the population is under 15 years of age, in comparison to about 16% in the United Kingdom, 18% in Australia and 20% in New Zealand and the United States.  In fact, Samoa has one of the ‘youngest’ populations in the world.

These young people face significant pressures related to negotiating traditional social structures in a modern and rapidly changing world.  While Samoa has a relatively stable economy, it is being seriously strained by the global economic downturn, which is resulting in a considerable reduction in remittances (money sent back to families in Samoa by people working overseas).  At the same time many young people and their families suffer from poverty of opportunity and unequal distribution of wealth.  Most families rely upon subsistence farming and fishing to survive.  Young people increasingly face problems associated with unemployment and underemployment.  Tragically, youth suicide rates in Samoa are amongst the highest in the world.

We work directly with disadvantaged young people

We work directly with disadvantaged young people, providing them with hope and a positive future through education, trades training, sport and recreation activities and cultural opportunities. We strive to enable them to lead productive and active lives, and to develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes to enable them to live as good Christians and honest citizens.  Sporting, cultural and recreational opportunities also enable them to use their free time in healthy and creative ways.

Education and training is the most effective way of escaping poverty and disadvantage

The most effective way to escape poverty and disadvantage is by learning the knowledge, skills and attitudes to shape your own future in a positive and constructive manner.  The educational programmes, skills development and trade training opportunities provided by Don Bosco Samoa enable young people to forge a productive pathway towards a positive future.  Don Bosco’s “Preventive System” also offers a comprehensive set of Christian values that enables young people to develop the self esteem, confidence and optimism to truly grow as “good Christians and honest citizens”.

Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world. (Nelson Mandela)

Our work provides young people with hope and a positive future

The education and training we provide enables our young people to develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes to progress to further education and training, find employment, support their families and contribute to the ongoing development of their nation.  This provides them with hope and a pathway to a productive and positive future.

A little bit of support goes a long way

The cost of living, like the standard of living, in most Pacific countries is significantly less than in affluent western countries like Australia.  A few Australian dollars make a bit difference especially when combined with the donations of others.

  • AU$450 will provide the fees for technical training for a year
  • AU$150 will provide fees for high school education for a year
  • AU$150 will provide the fees for technical training for a term
  • AU$50 will provide fees for high school education for a term
  • AU$20 will provide for the stationery needs for a student

We rely on your support

Your support is essential for us to continue our vital work on behalf of the young people of the Pacific.  Our schools, technical training centres and other youth programmes depend upon the financial, moral, technical and prayerful support of people around the world.

Your support enables you to be connected with Don Bosco Samoa

Your prayerful, personal and financial support of Don Bosco Samoa enables you to be connected with us, our young people and our work.  It enables you to provide hope and dignity to the young people of the Pacific.
